Do you get tired of your yard? I know I do! And there’s a reason for that. Sometimes you just need a little dose of the unexpected to take things to the next level.
If you’re looking for gardening solutions that are anything but conventional, you’re in exactly the right spot. I truly believe gardening is for everyone, even if you have limited space or other constraints. After seeing these pics, you’ll see nothing but opportunity!
Going Vertical
Let’s talk vertical gardens. These unique displays are getting so popular, and I love any space-maximizing approach. Lots of people are giving this a DIY twist.
For example, you can attach potted herbs and bush veggies to wire mesh to create your own.
This is also a wonderful way to cultivate plants inside, especially if you get plenty of light. This Mason Jar Herb Garden is amazing. It’s crafted with an old wooden board, some pipe clamps, and (of course) mason jars.
Don’t feel like making your own? No worries. You can just buy one and fill it! This GroVert Living Wall Planter will double as wall art for your indoor or outdoor space.
If you’ve read any gardening blogs, you’ve probably seen the palette garden concept. I think it’s a fabulous way to repurpose something functional. It creates a rustic-meets-modern finished product. And there are so many plant possibilities for filling it.
Creative & Clever Gardening
Now for a collection of innovative solutions that will put an unforgettable stamp on your space. Sometimes turning an idea on its head gives you the best results! Just look at these upside-down tomatoes.
Does your outdoor space literally just consist of a window? No problem! French designers Barreau & Charbonnet developed this pivoting window garden. It maximizes your space and creates a healthy solution for plants. Amazing!
How fabulous is this “Green House” Dog House?! It’s such a clever way to maximize space, and it adds so much style to your furry friend’s dwelling.
This pic just reminds us that creativity can be celebrated when you see your garden as a blank canvas for interesting vignettes. Plants with different textures, rocks, and other embellishments can make all the difference.
Beds & Boxes
These counter-height garden boxes are just perfect for those who would rather not be ground-bound. It’s so much easier on the back and extremities! The boxes are best built with untreated wood.
Small yard? Or no yard? No problem! Have you ever thought about moving your gardening bed or box indoors? Indoor planter boxes are so unexpected, and they instantly become focal points.
I couldn’t help but admire this full-scale indoor garden. It’s complete with supplemental light and repurposed plastic containers for catching excess water.
This indoor “bed” meets outdoor landscaping in the image below. It creates such an expansive feel and a seamless blend between the two spaces. The result is just an epic, peaceful feel.
Small Space Solutions
We now move to one of my favorite approaches: small space gardening. I love it because it’s for everyone. Even the trickiest space constraints can be overcome!
For example, a simple hanging basket can be transformed into a compact herb and vegetable garden.
This small space crate garden was crafted from Bordeaux wine boxes. The clean look of the containers makes the garden so stylish, and the small size means you can place them in a bunch of locations. In other words, even if your yard is tiny, you can find the right spot.
Even if your garden has to thrive on a balcony, don’t underestimate the power of a well-curated metal container. It’s the perfect setting for modern arrangements, like this exotic succulent planting.
Check out the beautiful mix of plant life and seashells. It’s very sculptural and so beautifully compact!
When you embrace dish gardening, no statement is too small. In fact, sometimes the smallest statements are the most powerful.
And of course, I’ve made no secret of my love for air plants. They are perfect for indoor spaces (and outdoor ones, just not in direct light).
These low-maintenance plants can be grouped to form a modern garden, especially with interesting containers. Below we see the Shane Powers for West Elm Air Garden Vessels.
Well, there you have it! Hopefully you’ve found some inspiration for your own space. Remember, you can grow a garden anywhere, indoors or out!
