Having plants at home is a total luxury, and for many of us, this means our space needs to serve both style and safety. Whether your home doubles as a zoo or you just have one curious cat, taking the time to choose the right plants can make a massive difference.
Today, I’m sharing some of my absolute favourite pet-safe plant ideas to help you create a space that makes you feel relaxed and keeps your furry friends safe. Here are 6 of my top picks.
1. Areca Palm
I’ve been absolutely dying to bring some tropical greenery into my house, but so many of them are toxic to pets. I was so thrilled to find out the Areca Palm is a safe choice!
This is the exact kind of plant you can show off in a big, statement pot. I’m thinking a metallic one for that perfect retro-modern vibe. It’s an instant focal point for any room.

It’s also known for being air-purifying and pretty easy to manage. The key is not to over-water it. A good rule is to give it a drink when the soil just below the surface starts to feel dry.
For lighting, a great tip is to let it get used to being inside slowly. You can put it outside in a spot with partial shade for a few weeks, and then bring it into its new home in a bright spot!

2. Prayer Plant
Next up is the Prayer Plant, and it’s a total showstopper. It really grabs your attention with its stunning, intricate leaves. I just love the mix of different green shades and those little pops of pink detailing.

This plant is pretty happy in medium lighting. You’ll want to keep its soil moist, but be careful not to make it too wet. It’s also really important to avoid direct sunlight, which can make those beautiful leaves fade.
When you’re picking a pot, just make sure it doesn’t compete with the foliage. Honestly, a simple pot is often the best choice to let those unforgettable leaves shine.

3. Ponytail Palm
If you want a plant with a truly sculptural vibe, look no further. The Ponytail Palm has this amazing wide base, a really striking trunk, and a full-on fountain of long leaves. It’s so dramatic!
It’s really not surprising why this plant is so often the main focal point in modern living rooms.

For care, bright light is what it loves best. It also has a really relaxed watering schedule, which is perfect for me. Just watering it once every one or two weeks is usually enough.
You can display one all by itself, or go for a really lush, tropical look and plant a whole row of them. That creates a high-end, resort-style feel.

4. Spider Plant
Okay, let’s talk about some foliage that really demands your attention! The Spider Plant is a classic for a reason. It has these long, spiky leaves that give you a really dramatic look, but somehow it never overpowers the room. I love seeing them on a fireplace mantel.

Because this plant has such great cascading tendencies and grows those little dangling “plantlets,” it’s absolutely ideal for hanging baskets.
Spider plants are happiest when they’re placed right next to a window. And the best part? It’s a plant that needs to dry out between waterings, which gives you plenty of time to remember to hydrate it!

5. Baby Rubber Plant
Are you looking for a plant that’s perfect for containers and just glistens with style? You have to check out the Baby Rubber Plant. It’s so shiny and bright, but it’s also wonderfully low-maintenance.
Those waxy, round leaves give it this special sheen and a shape that’s just ideal for whatever pot you pick.

Baby Rubber Plants love bright, indirect light. It’s apparently really easy to overwater them, so you have to resist the urge! In fact, letting the soil dry out almost completely between waterings is the best plan for this no-fuss plant.

6. Lemon Button Fern
This one is just so sweet. With its tiny arching stems and that cute, button-like foliage, the Lemon Button Fern is the perfect little accent piece for a shelf or a tabletop. It’s a petite plant and usually levels out at about one foot tall.

The fern’s curved shape and its delicate leaves also make it a great choice for hanging baskets. But at the same time, a simple terracotta pot is a perfect home for this dainty, eye-catching plant. It’s ideal for low to medium light, and you just need to keep the soil moist without completely oversaturating it.
