Even if your bedroom does not face the water, this subtle approach to coastal decorating offers a relaxed, livable atmosphere for any home. It uses simple furniture, classic blue and white tones, and various natural elements.
Add a Striped Rug
The dining room in this Southampton, New York surfing village retreat features a striking large scale sailor striped rug. Shiplap walls with a painted finish, light toned wood furniture, and natural accents like wicker pendant lights create timeless coastal charm. This aesthetic can seamlessly fit into any environment.
Keep It Minimal
This Maine kitchen offers a clean, minimalist interpretation of coastal decor. It showcases vertical painted white shiplap walls, uncovered windows, deep blue lower cabinets, and sleek silver toned accents.
Mix It Up
An organic coastal atmosphere defines this Sag Harbor, New York living room. It includes rustic ceiling beams, crisp white walls, and an engaging blend of eclectic furnishings and decorative items.
Add Themed Wallpaper
The walls of this cheerful laundry closet are adorned with a blue wave pattern wallpaper. White appliances and painted doors are equipped with hooks, providing a convenient spot for items needed to clean up sandy floors.
Play with Gray Tones
This Maine coast powder room features a weathered wood sink vanity with a blue gray finish. Soft gray wallpaper, displaying a subtle nautical rope pattern, beautifully complements this choice. A beveled mirror and marble countertops further enhance the cool color palette.
Keep It Simple
Blue and white stripes effortlessly convey a coastal aesthetic. Within this bright and airy living room, a comfortable off white sectional is adorned with a variety of casual pillows. Straightforward artwork and painted shiplap ceilings complete this relaxed, beachy environment.
Hang Vintage Coastal Themed Art
The breakfast nook in this Southampton, New York beach cottage is decorated with framed vintage coastal themed art. This art adds a touch of charm to a space that also includes antique wood furniture and a comfortable banquette upholstered in neutral colors.
Add Bohemian Design Inspired Touches
This compact laundry room combines a coastal blue and white color scheme with bohemian inspired elements. Bold patterned wallpaper and a woven pendant light add intriguing visual interest to the space.
Add a Spa Vibe
This bathroom exudes an easygoing beach cottage spa atmosphere. It features soothing blue walls, built in bench seating, and crisp white open shelving stocked with neatly folded towels. A warm toned wood pegboard hook on the wall offers a convenient spot for towels and robes.
Hang a Gallery Wall
This inviting beach cottage bedroom includes a cozy quilt and a pair of woven pendant lights. A small gallery wall is placed on the shiplap wall above the bed, serving as an alternative to a traditional headboard.
Mix Finishes
Various blue tones on the kitchen backsplash and island, combined with clean white built in cabinetry and light wood accents and flooring, bring coastal beach cottage charm to this downtown Portland, Maine residence.
Paint the Ceiling Beams
In this Nantucket, Massachusetts beachfront living room, shiplap walls and painted ceiling beams introduce texture to the otherwise all white interior. A blend of furnishings and decor crafted from natural materials like wood and rattan, along with vibrant blue accents and built ins styled with books and objects, gives the cozy space a clean, coastal feel that can be adapted to any interior.
Use Natural Hues
When a new cottage was acquired on the tree lined streets of a Florida community, the desire was for it to feel more like a personal home than a typical beach rental. Interior designers layered the house with soft celadon hues and gentle neutrals. The preferred colors are blue green tones and the shades of aged wicker and worn rugs, primarily reflecting the outdoor palette of the area.
Clad Walls In Shiplap
The shiplap wall paneling was extended from floor to ceiling to emphasize the impressive height of the space. Natural furniture fibers and a gray green cabinet color contribute to an elegant yet relaxed kitchen ambiance. The room maintains a cool and airy feel, even during the hottest Florida days.
Bring The Outdoors In
The back porch essentially functions as an additional living and dining area, complete with ceiling fans to provide a refreshing breeze on hot days. The transition between indoor and outdoor living feels effortless, especially when the French doors are fully open.
Take A Dip
In the bathroom, children can wash or bathe surrounded by playful fish imagery. The delightful aquatic wallpaper from Cole & Son does not overpower the room, as its print features soft, neutral colors.
Double Up Beds
For a long, narrow room, bunk beds often come to mind first. However, a different solution was sought for two daughters. Designers innovated with a 13 foot long upholstered headboard, paired with two twin beds each featuring a trundle underneath.
Keep Within Driving Distance
A Florida beach cottage was chosen for its ideal on the water experiences. Proximity was the deciding factor, allowing for departures on Friday afternoons in time to witness the sunset.
Go Nautical
The entryway treads were painted a deep nautical blue, inspiring a further extension of the theme. Stairwell spindles were replaced with robust Manila rope. This change, surprisingly, added a playful texture to the house.
Add An Outdoor Sink
On the screened back porch, a sign with the house’s name, “Why Knot,” hangs above a cast iron sink. This sink, salvaged from an 1850s home, proves highly versatile for tasks ranging from cleaning fish to deveining shrimp or filling dog bowls.
Make Room For More
Sons are encouraged to bring friends, necessitating ample space for sleepovers. Custom built bunk beds allow boys and their friends to gather, stay up late, and sleep in. The home is designed to be welcoming, with abundant extra blankets stored in the closet for any occasion.
Move Dining Outdoors
To maximize sleeping and living areas, an indoor dining room was not included. Meals are enjoyed around the trestle table and benches on the porch. During inclement weather, dining takes place in the entryway at a round table, with chairs brought from the den.
Look To The Past
A vacation home on South Carolina’s idyllic Kiawah Island was built with inspiration from pre Revolutionary Charleston homes. The vision was for a “new old” house that harmonized with its surroundings. The residence incorporates historic Lowcountry elements, including a lime washed brick foundation, practical shutters, and beaded lap siding.
Prepare To Entertain
The kitchen provides ample space for guests and morning coffee at the marble topped oak island and banquette. It was designed to resemble an old cookhouse gradually connected to the main home. Simpler lines and millwork, combined with a playful palette, enliven these historic elements.
Find Durable But Artful Pieces
The living room is equipped with sturdy vintage furniture and antique items, chosen to withstand regular use. The design considered the active presence of children in the space. Simultaneously, the furniture collection itself became a work of art.
Set Up A Cozy Hangout
In the upstairs sitting room, coziness was a top priority. The exceptionally plush sofa invites lounging, and the room’s patterns are designed to be forgiving of scuffs and spills. This space serves as a favorite family hub for everything from breakfast to movie nights.
Create An Indoor Outdoor Bar
An Idea House was built on Bald Head Island, North Carolina, a car free barrier island accessible only by boat. This location is bordered by the Cape Fear River to the west and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. Homes are encircled by porches, perfect for enjoying ocean breezes.
Indoor outdoor living was elevated by kitchen bifold windows that open like a drive through, offering easy access to the outdoor serving area and grilling station. The window’s striped cabana style valance is double sided, enhancing views from both inside and out.
Go For Beach Chic
This room is distinctly adult and beach chic. The yellow tone, featuring a hint of brown, harmonizes beautifully with the natural bamboo and rattan elements.
Wainscoting was constructed to a height of 54 inches to ensure the wallpaper did not dominate the space. Furniture and fabrics in sandy hues contribute to the room’s relaxed atmosphere.
Reuse Historic Elements
The living and dining area features a chocolate brown floor, crafted from century old joists salvaged from a tobacco company in North Carolina. This flooring is fitting for a new beach house that draws inspiration from historic homes. The dining chairs are sourced from a company known for using natural materials in its unique furnishings.
Make Porches A Second Home
The house boasts over 1,300 square feet of outdoor living area across its generous surrounding porches. Porches are intentionally designed as outdoor rooms. To ensure ample space for furnishings, each porch is dimensioned at a minimum of 8 by 8 feet.
